ESPNSTAR - “Champions League Twenty20 represents modern cricket. It is premium, aspirational, world class and the highest honour the game has to offer. It is to cricket what A R Rahman is to music. What Chairman says

The Champions League Twenty20 is the culmination of a 14-year-old dream. This truly is a momentous day in the history of cricket as the three Boards - Cricket Australia, Cricket South Africa & The Board of Control for Cricket in India along with ESPN STAR Sports, our global commercial partner, have embarked on this journey of starting a novel league where top global teams will compete for supremacy.

Many people have been asking me whether I have been on one long holiday after the inaugural season of the DLF Indian Premier League which ended on June 1 earlier this year. But the fact of the matter is that we have been hard at work with the top officials of Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa, creating what we believe is the best platform for club, state and county cricketers. This undoubtedly will be the World Championship of Club Cricket where the top teams will dream to qualify and rub shoulders with the best-of-the-best to be adjudged as the “Champion of Champions”. It will feature some of the biggest names in International cricket like Shane Warne, Mike Hussey, Dale Steyn, Muthiah Muralidharan and M.S. Dhoni among others. After a lot of deliberation and negotiations, it was decided that the inaugural edition of the Champions League Twenty20 will be held here in India at Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai from December 3rd to 10th, with the final being played in Chennai.

I have no doubt in my mind that the Champions League Twenty20 will strengthen the domestic leagues across the world and will ensure that the game of cricket garners global fame along the lines of other games like soccer. The BCCI along with Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa is also fully committed to building this tournament into a global platform that this league has the potential to achieve.

We are also extremely glad to have a strong partner like ESPN STAR Sports. Their commitment, strength over multiple platforms and their presentation will ensure that the inaugural edition will see fans from across the world glued to their TV sets in December. We are looking forward to a fruitful and mutually beneficial relationship till 2017. We are confident that the ESPN STAR Sports team will play an important role in taking the Champions League Twenty20 to every household not only in India but across the world.

Eight teams, including the reigning winners and runners-up from the domestic Twenty20 competitions in India (Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings), Australia (Western Australian Warriors and Victorian Bushrangers) and South Africa (Titans and Dolphins), plus Sialkot Stallions, the reigning Twenty20 champions from Pakistan and England Twenty20 Cup winners Middlesex will contest for the top honours in the 2008 Champions League Twenty20.

The Eight teams have been divided into two groups of four each and will initially play each other on a league basis. The top two teams will qualify for the semi-finals, with the Winners of Group A facing off against the Runners-Up of Group B and vice versa, in the last four stage. The winners will then clash in the Grand Finale to be played in Chennai on December 10th 2008. Champions League Twenty20 offers a prize purse of US $6 Million, which will strengthen the domestic leagues across the world and will ensure that the game of cricket garners global fame on lines of other games like soccer.

As the Chairman of the IPL, the other hat I wear, I am looking forward to two of our top teams from the Indian Premier League, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, giving other teams a run for their money.

We look forward to a grand opening season of the Champions League Twenty20 and hope that the event will set a high standard of the game and will attract more and more fans to cricket.

Finally, all that is left is to wish all the eight teams the very best. And we look forward to some electrifying action on the field in December.

May the best team WIN....
